S49 Ribbed Baseplates

S49 ribbed baseplates are a specific European-standard fastening component used primarily with S49 (49E1) rail, which has a 125 mm (approx. 4-15/16") base width. Unlike the flat rolled steel plates common in North America, these "ribbed" plates feature raised lateral ridges (ribs) that provide precise lateral restraint and alignment for the rail foot.

Technical Specifications for S49 Baseplates

These baseplates are typically manufactured from cast iron or forged steel and follow DIN or EN standards. 

• Compatibility: Designed specifically for S49 / 49E1 rail sections (mass of 49.39 kg/m).

• Dimensions: Common plate lengths range from 110 mm to 210 mm, depending on the specific application (standard track vs. turnouts).

• Weight: A standard S49 ribbed baseplate (e.g., Rph1-180/26) weighs approximately 9.07 kg (20 lbs).

• Hole Configuration: Often feature 2 or 4 holes for fastening to timber or concrete sleepers using screw spikes (such as Ss series) and plastic dowels.

• Bonded DFF (Direct Fixation Fastening): A "one-piece" system where a top plate and bottom plate are bonded with vulcanized rubber. This is frequently used with S49 rail in transit systems to reduce noise and vibration.

• Adjustability: Pandrol baseplate systems for this rail class often allow for +/- 12 mm of lateral adjustment and significant vertical shimming (up to +70 mm) to maintain perfect track gauge and alignment.
