• Design History: The PR401 was widely used on railway lines between 1960 and 1984, predominantly on F23 and F27 sleepers.

• Variant Evolution: The original PR401 featured a round toe, which was prone to excessive wear. It was largely replaced in 1970 by the PR401A, which features a flat toe to improve contact and longevity.

• Installation Tooling: Unlike modern "switch on-switch off" clips, the PR401 must be inserted using a pin puller. Using a hammer is discouraged as it can damage the rail, sleeper, or insulators.

• Compatibility: While primarily a legacy part, it remains in service on many networks and is suitable for wood ties, concrete ties, and slab track applications.
