The Spike Screw SS25 (or Ss25 sleeper screw) is a specialized railway fastener designed for high-stress environments, such as rail freight yards, terminals, and industrial rail systems. It is primarily used to anchor rails to either wooden sleepers or concrete ties, often in conjunction with plastic dowels for the latter.

Key Technical Specifications

The SS25 is part of the "Ss" series manufactured according to international standards such as UIC864-1, ISO898-1, and NF F500-50. 

• Standard Dimensions: Typically M24 × 165mm.

• Weight: Approximately 0.625 kg per unit.

• Material Grades: Available in grades 4.6, 5.6, 8.8, and 10.9.

• Tensile Load: Must withstand a physical tensile load of 130kN without breaking.

• Thread Design:

      Upper Thread: M24 (following GB196 standards).

      Lower Thread: Special M25 (often a trapezoidal or specialized rail thread).

Application & Durability

The SS25 is favored for its superior holding power, providing roughly twice the fixing power of a traditional dog spike. Its expected service life varies by environment: 

Passenger Lines: 15+ years due to consistent alignment requirements.

Freight Mainlines: 12–16 years, built to resist fatigue from heavy axle loads.

Industrial Plants: 8–12 years, depending on chemical or thermal exposure. 

Surface Finishing Options

To prevent corrosion, especially in coastal or high-moisture areas, SS25 spikes are finished with: 

Hot-Dip Galvanized (HDG) or Zinc Plated.

Dacromet or Sherardizing for enhanced chemical resistance.

Black Oxide or Plain Oiled for standard environments.
